Quṭb al-Dīn Shīrāzī and His Observations on Ptolemy’s Lunar Model
Dr. Kaveh Niazi discusses the 13th-century Persian polymath and poet, Quṭb al-Dīn Shīrāz, and examines his approach to theoretical astronomy.
This Zoom event was organized on March 14, 2024.
Quṭb al-Dīn Shīrāzī (d. 1311 CE) completed his astronomical text Ikhtiyārāt-i muẓaffarī in 1282 CE. A richly detailed work composed in Persian, the Ikhtiyārāt covers much of the material appearing in his Arabic text Nihāyat al-idrāk fī dirāyat al-aflāk (completed in 1281 CE.). Intriguingly, Shīrāzī did include in the Ikhtiyārāt material that is missing from its companion. One such passage treats the concept of the prosneusis point as defined for the Ptolemaic lunar model in the Almagest. An examination of Shīrāzī’s discussion of the prosneusis point, both in comparison to related discussions on the physics of planetary orbs, and in the context of Shīrāzī’s more general cosmological discussions in other parts of the Ikhtiyārāt, offers a window to Shīrāzī’s approach to theoretical astronomy, while highlighting, as well, his approach to the authoring of technical texts for astronomy students.
Kaveh Niazi studied electrical engineering and physics at the University of California, where he received his Ph.D. After a decade as a technologist in Silicon Valley, he attended Columbia University, where he received a Ph.D. in the history of science, in 2011. He has published his research on the astronomy of the Islamic world under the title “Qutb al-Din Shirazi and the Configuration of the Heavens” and “A Princely Pandect on Astronomy.” Since graduating from Columbia University, he has taught Arabic, Persian, and math. He teaches math, physics, and Arabic at Stanford Online High School.
This event was co-sponsored by The Open Cultural Astronomy Forum and the Hamid and Christina Moghadam Program in Iranian Studies at Stanford University.
The Open Cultural Astronomy Forum (OCAF) is an international initiative embracing cultural diversity in astronomy. The OCAF seminar series covers a variety of topics, including pre-modern astronomy knowledge from diverse societies. Seminars are typically held on the first Thursday of each month, with varying frequency. More information can be found at openculturalastronomyforum.github.io/.

Is there a religious shortcoming in the history of Hindustani, whose destiny was to migrate to the Lut desert and 500 years ago, they created an Islamic copy of the Zoroastrian religion called the Shia religion, which is characterized by lies, totemism, self-harm, and classism, and with the discovery of oil a hundred years ago by The English became a nation-state with a false history and identity and became a political problem. Has it reached the end of its parasitic life in the last hundred years?

I have watched this part and the previous one, which did not rise to my expections. I was expecting these two conferences to be about the book "Canticle of the Birds", as announced. Speaker could have summed up his two lectures into three essential parts: History/Apprehensions of some birds at the start of journey/ Seven courses towards Simorgh. What I heard/watched was only part of history! As Queen Victoria would have said:THESE TWO LECTURES LEAVE A LOT TO BE DESIRED!!

Dear Mr. Milani, you have briefly mentioned of Shah’s role in international financial markets, giving $1.2Bn to different countries. I think you need to investigate more on this matter. I remember at that period there was lots of articles in economist journals on danger of financial capital of Iran and Arabs as the The entry of Iranian and Arab financial capital into the international financial capital market caused a decrease in the interest rate of international financial capital and Iran revolution and occupying the American embassy, then Iran- Iraq war, then occupying Kuwait by Iraq and finally making Saudi Arabia preventing financial market. Solved this problem. What do you think about this?

I am struggling to figure out if this is a program funded by Soros Foundation or an independent Iranian scholars trying to let the world know more about Iran. Specially that the ropic is one of the hottest topics that are usually promoted by the likes of Soros foundation and other well known Left/Liberal names. As far as Iranian culture goes, anything after Arab invasion counts very little towards Iranian culture. Secondly, she has picked the worst era of Iran, Qajar era when all Iranians, not just women were slaves of Qajar landlords. What i see is blatant omission of pre-islamic periods in Iran's history where the masculinity and femininity dynamics was as we hear from Avesta, our legendary book Shahname and other Pahlavi and Persian spurces, as well as Vedic texts and other iranians books such as Nart saga. Also, I myself a an Iranian true to our ancient civilization, our king and our god Ahura Mazda, cannot for one second accept that this program is the work of independent scholars and free from any agendas. "Western attire" the very same western arrire that originate from Ancient Iran. Everything "West" has is from Iran, I mean everything, from the language, writing system, calender, philosophy, science, music, culture, architecture, clothes...etc..etc as I said, any era after Sassanid, except short period inder the two great Pahlavis cannot count towarda Iranian culture. In the end, background of Mr. Milani is very well known for us Iranians, especially after standing with foreign agents such as Hamed Esmailyun who caused the most damage to the most recent Iranian uprising.

It's fascinating to see that literary figures like ”Uncle Napoleon”, have real-life counterparts. As you probably know, ”Uncle Napoleon” was also very interested in conspiracy theoris and was also fully convinced that everything associated with modern Western civilization was basically discoveries from ancient Persia. According to the psychologist Adler, delusions of grandeur have their root in feelings of inferiority. But thanks for the laugh anyway.

@dumanroulain haha the famous 'uncle napoleon" beautifully written by Ann Lambton and Mr Zaehner empire for Gungadins to call off anyone who accuse Britain Yeah, Khomeini coming from Paris was also a scene from uncle napoleon. 😄 two hundred years of crimes committed by western colonials in Iran was also a chapter from "Uncle napoleon" Delusion of grandeur 😄 that's why the guadalupe confrence engineerd 1979 regime change, because of the same "inferiority complex", and if they hadn't staged and executed 1979 terrorist takeover of Iran with all their might, the west would now be the 3rd world, and the proof of that is that most of the west was already 3rd world compared to Iran in 1979. That's why they've kept Iran occcupied for the last 45 years, have been brushing the heinous crimes of the terrorist regime under the carpet, and have been sending thenislamic regime plane-loads of money despite the so-called sanctions. The West are very well aware what Iran will become if they allow it to become sovereign as it was under Pahlavi. Now I don't know which country you come from, but if you're westerner, not much is expected of you, because your capacity is that much. And I don't think you're a westerner. I vote for an Iranian Gungadin. Rudyard kippling knows you very well. You all are born in the image of Gungadin. Today, even the cats and dogs on streets of Iran know who is behind the islamic regime in Iran.
